Designer Eyeglasses Biography
The glasses, marketed by the Yabushita Group, will feature Biofront in all plastic parts of the design, including the temples – a world first in commercial eyeglasses, claims Teijin. The use of bioplastic is not only good for the environment but also helps the user avoid skin rashes because of Biofron’t antibacterial properties, adds the firm.
Yabushita expects the glasses will raise around JPY50m (€400,000) in revenues per annum.
Biofront is a bioplastic with a melting point of 210°C. It has better hydrolytic stability than PLA and achieves semi-crystallisation in less than a quarter of the time, says Teijin.
Last year, Teijin began producing Biofront at a new demonstration plant in Matsuyama, Japan, raising its annual production capacity by 1,000 tonnes.
